Tommy:
Hello, and welcome back to Football & English! After a nice break, following a busy and sleepless Euro 2020 we're back! And we're ready for a huge season of football ahead. As always, Tomo and I will discuss the big topics and talking points from the world of football, using Japanese and English. Tomo, nice to speak with you again.

Tomo:

Tommy:
I'm okay. In lockdown, we just spoke about it, but yeah, Corona seems to be taking hold. How about you? How are you?

Tomo:
Not too bad.

Tommy:
Today I thought we don't have to have a particular topic. Instead, just talk about some of the big things that have happened since we last recorded. There's been a lot, some big transfers, Messi Jack Grealish, maybe soon Harry Kane, lots of rumors about him. There's also been some tweaks to offside and VAR, and also having crowds back at the matches... I mean, it's just amazing watching the Premier League with fans and the stadiums again. It's been so good. Do you have anything you'd like to talk about?

Tomo:

Tommy:
So when you say there's many problems, I think of obviously the organisers and the problems I had with the sexism, things like that. Those topics didn't really make Australian news. We didn't hear about those things. The other problems, like I think about the logo problem they had a year, two years ago, they were spoken about at the time, but everyone forgot.

The only problem right now in foreign media was, well during the Olympics, was Corona. It was COVID like, how do we deal with COVID? And once the games started, there wasn't a whole lot of coverage in Australia. I think so the TV channel that we had, Channel 7, they have the Olympic rights. They weren't going to talk about it negatively because they don't want to lose, or they don't want to make IOC angry and then not get the money or the rights for next time. I was really frustrated that they ignored just how much Japanese people sacrificed for these Olympic games. Lots of people talking about athletes. Athletes get to live their dream. There's Japanese people dying now, Japanese people who can't get to hospital. I wish they'd talk more about it.

Tomo:
Did you see the Olympics games?

Tommy:
Yeah, I watched a lot of it. Yeah, with being in lockdown for a bit, we had nothing to do. So I watched a lot of it.

Tomo:

Tommy:
I watched the soccer but to be honest, I'm not a big fan of soccer at the Olympics. We have a World Cup, we have Euros, we have so much football .For me, the Olympics is about watching different sports. Sports you don't normally watch, so, I watched the Australia games, all of those; the Matildas, the women's team, but then I didn't watch a whole lot of the other ones. And also, they often played at the same time. So Australia and Japan at the same time, I couldn't watch both.

Tomo:

Tommy:
Yeah, it was good and Kubo, he really turned up, scored a few goals, so it was good to see him. He's so highly regarded that it's nice to see him maybe starting to come good on his potential.

Tomo:

Tommy:
Yeah. I mean, with the euros too, just the amount of football they're playing, especially last year with Corona. It delayed the season and they played a lot of football in a short amount of time. I think we could see some more injuries again this year.

Tomo:

Tommy:
Especially as you said, the Spain players that played Euros and the Olympics. It's tough, mentally as well. You need a mental break from football.

Tomo:

Tommy:
Yeah, that's right! We needed a break too.

Tomo:

Tommy:
So my first topic is something that I brought up during the Euros, which is Puma's kits. Did you see the new Puma kits?

Tomo:

Tommy:
Yeah. I don't wanna sound like an old man again, but they're awful! What were they thinking? I said during the euros, I said, I didn't like them because it said the country name. It didn't have the flag or the badge. I complained about that. And they've done it with a team. Like it's worse with a team. How can you not have a badge?

Did you see I think, yeah, Fenerbahce, he went to kiss the shirt. Where's the badge? It's just really I mean, I think there's this real competition now to create just these different shirts and come up with amazing ideas for social media. It's just, it's a race to the bottom for me. Just keep it simple. Just, for the fans who want it.

Tomo:

Tommy:
Yeah. That's on all of them apparently, the badges, like that.

Tomo:

Tommy:
I would actually say these are the worst kids ever made. Like, ever. They're just, they look like fake, like something you'd get from a Chinese website for kids. Yeah. Like just fake.

Tomo:

Tommy:
That's right, that was the other one, like training kits. So, Puma... and Twitter as well has been pretty brutal. No one likes them. I haven't seen one person. So I bet they're a bit concerned at Puma.

Tomo:

Tommy:
Yeah, we've spoken about that before. I'd love to interview someone with that experience.

Tomo:

Tommy:
I'd also like to hear from someone at a club who's involved in that process. Does Puma come to you and say, "hey, here's your kit." And then you say, "oh, we don't like it. Make another one." Or do they have to accept it? I can't imagine Manchester city would be happy with that third kit, but anyway, they're getting millions of dollars from Puma. So maybe they are.

Tomo:

Tommy:
Yeah. Yeah. I haven't looked at it. Nike are doing some crazy things to the Tottenham kit. It's like space. It's very bright, but it's actually sold out. It's very popular.

How about you for the second topic?

Tomo:
Are you watching, Harry Kane?

Tommy:
That's right. Yeah, that was good!

Tomo:

Tommy:
Yeah, it's an odd one. We don't know. It's just very bizarre. It's just a strange situation for him.

Tomo:

Tommy:
Yeah, it's amazing.

Tomo:

Tommy:
Kiyo-san?

Tomo:

Tommy:
Yeah, I saw his photos.

Tomo:

Tommy:
Yeah, it's crazy.

Tomo:

Tommy:
Yeah I'm desperate for him to come to Tottenham. So excited. He's a pretty good player. He looks like he's going to be a very good player and we need a Japanese player at Tottenham!

Tomo:

Tommy:
Yeah, you'd think so. At Tottenham he'd play, he would be an important player for us, I think. I think a lot of Spurs fans are excited by him. [00:09:00] Don't know much about him, but excited. And yeah, his name as well. He's got a good name.

Tomo:

Tommy:
Cheap Tommy. Tomiyasu, cheap Tommy.

Tomo:

Tommy:
Yeah. Tommy Gin! That's right.

Tomo:

Tommy:
Yeah. Okay. I've heard his name. I don't know much about him, but okay. I'll keep an eye out for him. The second Oka-chan.

Tomo:

Tommy:
Cool. And just quickly on Postecoglou. It's amazing, on Twitter, amongst Australian football fans, it's gone crazy. Everyone is just so happy for him, which is good. He deserves it, but it's just, yeah, it's incredible. Yeah, he's got a good chance and Australians are very proud, basically.

Tomo:

Tommy:
Yeah. I think he'll do well over there. It's amazing, actually, how well he did at Yokohama, considering the language problem. Because so much of his management is about talking to people. Yeah, it's amazing that he did so well with Japanese, getting that message across. But I think he'll do very well at Celtic. And I think, he could go to an even bigger club in the future.

Tomo:

Tommy:
No!

Tomo:

Tommy:
My second one is a personal one. I mentioned last season that I was doing my referees course. Becoming a referee. So during the break I actually started, I refereed my first two matches. So I thought I would talk about that a little bit. Unfortunately, because of COVID and we're back in lockdown, football's finished basically. There is not going to be any more games this season. But it was really interesting. I was a bit disappointed actually with how... I'm not sure how to explain it, but it felt like I was there [00:11:00] as a, almost like a principal of a school.

How do you say principal?

Tomo:

Tommy:
All I'm there for is to do paperwork and make sure people are following rules. So I refereed 11 year old boys and 12 year old boys, and I spent more time doing the team sheet before. So you get a team sheet with the players names, their photo. You have to make sure every kid is on the team sheet, their numbers match. Then every time they score a goal, you have to write down who scored and the time. Which maybe for an adult's match is fair enough, but for kids, I thought, wow, who cares? They're kids. They don't need to know goal scorers. And then afterwards I have to submit that to Football Victoria who look after the league and then they do whatever reports.

And then after the match, I got feedback saying there was no technical area. You know the box where the coaches stand?

Tomo:

Tommy:
You're supposed to have lines around that. So the referee assessor, the person watching me for my first two matches. He said they should have a technical area and I'm like, "come on!" 12 year old kids don't need a technical area. It's just...I was really frustrated. These kids are turning up on Sunday mornings to have fun playing football, and instead, the referees are there to create these rules and basically make it no fun for anyone. So I was really disappointed. Football's fun, especially for kids, 11 year olds. Who cares?!

Tomo:

Tommy:
I agree with that because then, if you're getting, you don't know who's the coach and who should be talking to you so that I agree with that. In this case, the fans, the parents were actually, there was a grand stand, there was a stadium, the parents were sitting there. There was no one around, so it was just pointless.

But I don't know. There's just a general kind of feeling of it: this is refereeing. Maybe this is why we have so many problems with referees. They're more worried about the rules than the fun.

Tomo:

Tommy:
Yep.

Tomo:

Tommy:
Actually, I said that to the person watching me, the referee assessor, I said " I'm a football player. So I want to referee like I want a referee when I'm playing." And he said, "no, you shouldn't be a player. You're a referee." That's, what's frustrating about football, right? The referees don't understand the situations of a game. They don't understand what a player goes through. So anyway, that was my little, I just wanted to complain a bit about that situation.

Tomo:

Tommy:
Well, if I continue, I might not bother next season, so we'll see. Yeah. .

Tomo:

Tommy:
Thank you very much! Yeah, it was good. Just about two weeks, three weeks ago, I think, proposed to my girlfriend. So yeah, it's good. For people who don't know, she's Japanese. That's very convenient that we will probably... actually, I don't know if I've even told you Tomo, but we will probably move back to Japan next year.

Tomo:

Tommy:
Yeah, Osaka. So we may be able to meet finally.

Tomo:

Tommy:
Let's have a party.

Tomo:

Tommy:
I'm looking forward to it, hopefully, if Japan can please just get Corona under control, because it's a bit scary over there right now. I guess that's a good thing to bring up now. I hope everyone is keeping safe. Japan and Australia are both in really bad situations right now. Yeah, hopefully, especially people over here in Australia. I think we're all in lockdown at the moment, pretty much. Everyone is very tired. I'm very tired. I was saying to Tomo before, we can't go outside at night, like we're not allowed outside.

It's pretty stressful. So hopefully if this half an hour can give you a little bit of a break from that. That's what we want to do.

Tomo:

Tommy:
I have to say, yeah, I'm so happy. The Premier League's back. Having something to watch is so good. The Olympics were great. Now the Premier League, the Euros as well, obviously, that was amazing. Yep. Big season ahead.

Speaking of that, this season, we want to make this podcast more interactive. During the Euros, we got so many amazing comments and some feedback. We want to make that happen every week.

You know the drill, the website, there's a form down the bottom of every episode to submit your feedback, submit your comments, your questions. What would you like us to talk about this season? We're open to ideas. We make this show for you. We want to help you improve your English, learn more about football, things that you maybe don't know about, whatever it is, just let us know, and yeah, we'll discuss it on the show.

Tomo:

Tommy:
Thank you very much for listening. See you again next week.

Tomo:
Bye now!
