Episode Notes

In early December 2024, Premier League referee David Coote was sacked by PGMOL, the group responsible for referees in England after social media scandals blew up and raised questions over match-fixing and a number of other issues.

Since then, David Coote has done interviews to address the situation and provide more context as to what happened and why.

Vocabulary

  1. Reputation: the opinion that people in general have about someone or something
    ”David Coote’s reputation was left in tatters after this scandal.”
  2. Untenable: a situation that cannot continue as it is
    “David Coote’s actions were found to be in serious breach of the provisions of his employment contract, with his position deemed untenable.”
  3. Accusation: a statement saying that someone has done something morally wrong, illegal, or unkind
    ”A further accusation around match fixing was made by The Sun newspaper.”
