Episode Notes

Last week, the Columbus Crew held on to beat Los Angeles FC 2-1 in the MLS Cup. It’s the third time the Crew have won America’s top football prize, having also won in 2008 and 2020.

So this is the first of two episodes where we take a deep dive into the world of Major League Soccer.

Vocabulary

  1. Americanise: to become or make something typical of the US or US culture
    ”In the beginning, the MLS was a very Americanised version of football.”

  2. Expansion: to increase in size, number, or importance
    ”Teams added to the MLS are called expansion teams”

  3. Unique: being the only existing one of its type or, more generally, unusual, or special in some way
    *”The early days of the MLS included some very unique rules.”
