Substitutes play a crucial role in deciding football matches, and this week we required a substitute of our own! Unfortunately, we are not able to publish the interview we conducted with a staff member at one of the world’s biggest football clubs…so we’re bringing this episode off the bench!

Vocabulary

  1. Tweak: to change something slightly, especially in order to make it more correct, effective, or suitable
    ”The manager made a late tweak, bringing on another defender to protect the lead.”
  2. Splinter: a small, sharp, broken piece of wood, glass or plastic
    ”To be on the bench is sometimes referred to as ‘getting splinters’”
  3. Contribute: to be one of the reasons why something happens
    ”A striker coming off the bench is always looking to contribute to a positive outcome.”
